You'd think I'd at least rate a Michelob. Don't be an ingrate. You're calling me an ingrate? I never asked you to do it, Layne. A friend doesn't have to ask a friend to do something like that. Ah, it's warm even! You don't even care do you? I ain't drinking it. About yourself you dumbfuck! How do you expect other people to care about you? It's people like that are sending this country down the tubes.

about

In January 3022 Michael & Squiddy reconvened to discuss plans for a 3rd Freak Establishment album. The writing sessions were initially unproductive until the duo "hit their stride" and the "ideas started pouring in." The Faceless Character met with the group a few weeks into the sessions with a detailed concept and name for the still untitled album. The album would be titled "Retroflections."

Retrospective: Looking back on or dealing with past events or situations.
Reflection: Serious thought or consideration

Retroflection: The movement of an ocean current that doubles back on itself. The act of bending backward.

The Faceless Character elaborated on the concept and name saying "just like before, the ideas the guys were working on worked perfectly with my concept without either having been introduced to each other prior. It was a magical thing! We were all in immediate agreement that the broad themes of the album should be dreams, duality, the 1980s, nostalgia, and lost forms. I wanted the guys to travel back into the past but not let nostalgia cloud their view of it. I wanted it to be a less fantastical look and more realistic."

Just as with the group's previous album Fata Morgana, Michael & Squiddy played all the guitar and did all of the synth programming for the album in FL Studio. In addition to various movie samples scattered throughout the tracks, the album also features spoken word passages from Michael and vocals from Squiddy, a first for the group.

And once again music videos have been made for all of the tracks, which undergo a "filter layering process" combining phone filter app effects with the "unlimited creativity" of iMovie. The music videos have been described as "splatterhouse" in nature with surreal "psychedelic horror" elements that highlight the duo's penchant for imagery ranging from cult horror films to obscure YouTube tutorial videos.

The digital/physical album will be released August 25th 2023 (3023) on Squidropolis Records. Digital pre-order available now!
